Zimbabwe
Witness the echoes of an empire at the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, then feel the earth shake beneath the “Smoke that Thunders” at Victoria Falls and the secluded shadows of Hwange National Park. Whether you are tracing the steps of ancient kings or tracking elephant herds on an exclusive private safari, every moment feels like a discovery.
Essential travel information
1. Top Destinations
Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya): One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Known as the “Adventure Capital of Africa,” it offers white-water rafting, bungee jumping, and helicopter “Flight of Angels” tours.
Hwange National Park: Zimbabwe’s largest park, famous for hosting over 40,000 elephants. It is one of the best places in the world to see the “Big Five” (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino) in a pristine, uncrowded environment.
Mana Pools National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for walking safaris and canoeing along the Zambezi River. It is known for its “standing elephants” that reach high into the trees for pods.
Matobo National Park: Iconic for its giant granite boulders (kopjes) and ancient San Bushmen rock art. It is also a key sanctuary for both black and white rhinos.
Lake Kariba: The world’s largest man-made lake, perfect for luxury houseboats, sunset cruises, and tiger fishing.
2. Best Time to Visit
Peak Safari Season (July – October): The dry winter months. Vegetation is thin and animals congregate around waterholes, making wildlife very easy to spot.
Victoria Falls in Full Flow (March – June): The falls are at their most powerful following the summer rains. Be prepared for a lot of spray (and getting soaked!).
Green Season (November – March): Lush scenery, great birdwatching, and lower prices. However, some remote camps (especially in Mana Pools) may close due to muddy roads.
3. Entry Requirements & Logistics
Visas: Most international travelers can obtain a Visa on Arrival (approx. $30–$50 USD).
KAZA Univisa: If you plan to visit Zambia as well, ask for the KAZA Univisa ($50 USD), which allows multiple crossings between the two countries for 30 days.
Passports: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date and have at least 3 blank pages.
Money: The US Dollar (USD) is the primary currency for tourism. Carry small, crisp denominations (bills printed after 2009), as change is often scarce and digital payments can be unreliable outside of luxury lodges.
4. Safety & Health Tips
Health: Zimbabwe is a malaria-risk area. Consult your doctor about anti-malarial medication before you travel. Drink only bottled or filtered water.
Safety: While tourist areas like Victoria Falls are generally very safe, exercise caution in major cities like Harare after dark.
Photography: It is illegal to take photos of government buildings, military sites, police officers, or the President’s motorcade/residence.
Wildlife: Always follow your guide’s instructions. When on safari, stay inside your vehicle unless told otherwise.
